Dataset Details - Irish National Frog Database
A database of frog and frog spawn sightings from the Frogwatch and 'Hop to it' - Irish Frog Survey surveys.
28/06/2011
12/09/2016
To establish the distribution of the common frog (Rana temporaria) and to promote awareness of nature conservation amongst the general public.
The majority of records are of casual observations submitted from the general public on recording cards, originally to An Foras Forbartha (until 1984) and from 1997 to the present to the Irish Peatland Conservation Council.
The island of Ireland
1979 to 2007
The data was received by record cards submitted by the general public. The data was digitised from the record cards and some checking of locations and grid reference was done. As frogs and frog spawn are unlikely to be confused with any other species in Ireland, the assumption made is that mis-identification is not a significatn issue.
The database is being added to each year by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. The database up to 1997 was used by the National Parks and Wildlife Service as part of the Article 17 (Habitats Directive) reporting process.
