To provide quantitative data that can be used to assess changes in bat populations in the long term.
For randomly generated 30 km2 squares, driving a 58 mile fixed survey route, consisting of 20 monitoring transects of 1 mile length, spaced at 2 miles apart. All bat echolocation calls are recorded onto minidiscs and species identified post-survey by sonographic analysis.

Results of the survey are written up in an annual end of year report available from Bat Conservation Ireland.
