Dataset Details - National Bat Database of Ireland
The dataset contains records of bat observations received and maintained by Bat Conservation Ireland, as well as bat records submitted directly to National Biodiversity Data Centre (to end 2022). The data come from numerous different surveys, some of which have been undertaken by BCIreland, their members, citizen scientist recorders and professional ecologists.

The reason for data capture is ultimately to improve knowledge on bat ecology and distribution to assist in bat conservation measures.
The methods of data capture vary depending on the purpose of the survey.
Island of Ireland. Data have been captured often at a fine level of resolution, but are only displayed at 1km resolution to protect location of roosts and other important sites. The location name is also withheld for a similar reason.
1974 to 2023
The data have been submitted by suitably qualified bat workers and recorders, or have been verified by suitably qualified bat workers. The Lesser Horseshoe bat roost records contained in the database are not shown, as these are available through the Lesser Horseshoe bat roost database managed by NPWS
