Limerick City and County Council - Report Invasive Plants App
This dataset captures the locations of four of the more common invasive plants in Ireland: Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica); giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum); Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and Winter heliotrope (Petasites fragrans).
2017
2019
This survey aims to crowd source data on the distribution of these plants in Ireland in general, and in Limerick in particular, to gain a better understanding of the extent of the problem they represent and to allow a more strategic approach to be taken to their management.
The data is collected via a smart phone app called "report invasive plants". This App was designed for Limerick City & County Council (LCCC) to be self explanatory, fast and easy for the lay person to use. The app feeds data to a database and map maintained by LCCC on a Drupal platform. The map can be accessed on the internet at https://invasivespecies.limerick.ie/
Island of Ireland.
The survey began on 7th Feb 2017 and will continue indefinitely.
All reports are reviewed by a member of LCCC staff who has recevied training in invasvie species identfication. The reviewer checks that the photograph is clear and that the species in the photograph is the same as that named in the submission. If there is a discrepancy, the report is not approved. The reviewer also checks the location on google maps to see if it corresponds to the named location and finally, where possible, google street view is checked to see if the presence of the species can be confirmed. If the species and location are both deemed to be accurate, the report is approved and published on the map mentioned above.
Additional information can be obtained from https://invasivespecies.limerick.ie/ or from Simon Jennings simon.jennings@limerick.ie Limerick City and County Council.
