Investigating the Spread of Allium triquetrum and Lysichiton americanus in Ireland
Presence data along a section of the Tolka River in Dublin

To determine if current data on these species is accurate, or if there have been observable changes in their spread.
Screenshots of satellite-view map segments were taken from Google Maps. Squares were drawn to scale over the Tolka River accurate to 2,500 m2, pathways were drawn, and the land to examine between the pathways and the river were shaded. When a sighting of A. triquetrum or
L. americanus was positively identified, the precise geographical coordinates were determined using Google Maps on a mobile device, with location services enabled for greater accuracy and the satellite view filter applied. The coordinates were recorded, cross-referenced with the survey maps and the grid square where the sighting occurred was recorded as present.
Subsequent sightings of each species within grid squares already recorded as such were omitted as the species presence had been established. A brief description of the habitat where each sighting occurred was also recorded.
Violet Hill Park, National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, and Griffith Park. Land between the paths through each section and the Tolka River.
19th February 2026 - 14th April 2026
Grid reference data was cross-referenced on multiple devices to ensure accuracy. Plants positively identified using Wildflowers of Ireland field guide, and learned experience over duration of the literature review accompanying the survey.
