This programme aimes to determine crayfish plague prevalence and the impact of the disease on the Irish crayfish population.

The programme uses environmental DNA (eDNA) as a primary screening methodology with species specific real-time PCR tests for the presence of Crayfish Plague and White-clawed crayfish filtered from water samples filtered onsite.

Surveillance sites were selected based on the historical distribution of A. pallipes and SACs where A. pallipes is listed as a qualifying interest across Ireland. Catchment selection was as per the Water Framework Directive (WFD) catchment and sub-catchment divisions of the River basin management plan with emphasis on catchments known to be already affected by A. astaci.

Field control filtered in the field and Laboratory Control filtered on return to the lab are included. Negative template controls (NTC), negative extraction controls (NPC), Internal Positive Control (IPC) and Positive control material are included in each real-time PCR test.
