Dataset Details - Purse Search Shark and Ray Eggcase Sightings Scheme Data, 2007-2018
Distribution of shark and ray eggcases around Ireland's coasts, including citizen scientist observations of discarded eggcases washed up on beaches, as well as some sightings of live eggs underwater. Includes 2 species of shark and 10 species of skate or egglaying ray.

To use public participation as a tool for investigating egglaying elasmobranch nursery areas in Ireland.
Observations by citizen scientists were gathered through an online sightings form, with provision of either a photograph or eggcase sample required for species verification. Identification of species was carried out by marine biologists in Marine Dimensions with expertise and experience in the identification of elasmobranch eggcases. Sighting location coordinates were determined according to the information provided by observers in sighting reports and through follow up with our team. In cases where precise coordinates were not provided by the observer, Google Earth was used to determine lat longs for location names. The degree of confidence in the location accuracy was also assessed through the Confidence in Location attribute.
