Dataset Details - ObSERVE Visual Surveys for Cetaceans in the Irish Atlantic Margin
During all transects to and from the ObSERVE Acoustic SAM deployment sites and during the PAM towed hydrophone surveys (during daylight hours), a visual survey to collect ancillary cetacean sightings data was conducted by the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

To assess the occurrence, distribution and abundance of cetaceans in the Irish Atlantic Margin
Visual detections of cetaceans and marine megafauna by obervers during opportunistic line transect surveys conducted from ships or sailing craft
Irish Atlantic Margin
2015 - 2017
During daylight hours, a minimum of three people (two primary observers experienced in cetacean line transect survey methods and cetacean identification, and one data recorder) were required to carry out the survey. Primary observers scanned the area around the ship, out to a distance of 1,000 m, with the naked eye. The observers scanned from dead ahead to 90° to port or starboard, depending on which side of the vessel they were positioned.Sightings, species identification, behaviour and group size were confirmed with the aid of 7 X 50 binoculars. The team of three primary observers rotated positions every hour to avoid bias on one side of the trackline and conducted two hours on effort and one hour off (operating LOGGER) to avoid a decline in sightings detection due to fatigue.
