A database of the sightings of rare birds whose records have been assessed and accepted by the Irish Rare Birds Committee.

To maintain a list of the birds recorded in the Republic of Ireland and its inshore waters, managed by the Irish Rare Birds Committee. The Irish Rare Birds Committee assess records of certain rare and scarce species, adjudicates on their accuracy and publishes the accepted records annually as the Irish Bird Report.
Sighting are made or reported by birdwatchers. Sighting are assessed by the Irish Rare Bird Commitee using whatever evidence is available. Traditionally this took the form of written notes, field sketches or sound recordings, but in recent years confirmation is more often by photographic evidence that is published in the popular birding press, posted on the internet or submitted directly to the Committee.
Principally, the coverage is the Republic of Ireland and its the inshore waters up to 30km from the nearest land or where relevant, the median point between Ireland and Great Britain. Some 'At sea' records are also included. Thesre refer to records of birds outside the 30 km limit but still within the Exclusive Economic Zone which extends to approximately 370 km (200 nautical miles) offshore or where relevant, the median point between Ireland and Great Britain.
1767-2015
The data are to the highest standard. All of the sightings included in the dataset have been verified either by an expert or in recent decades by the Irish Rare Birds Committee. The records are regularly review and if necessary revised, based on advances in species identification of some of the more difficult groups.
The dataset is almost complete. There are some historic sighting where there is insufficent information to enable the sightings to be mapped accurately. All records were compiled by Kieran Fahy and made available to the Data Centre for mapping.
