Through a variety of sources, but mostly electronic submission. Older records were generated from hard copy record cards.

From 1965 to 2015
The data were validated against known vice-county distributions of the species, and (for critical species) by expert examination of specimens.
Complete and up to date as of 2018.
The data for Britain, Isle of Man and Channel Islands is available through the UK's National Biodiversity Network Gateway http://data.nbn.org.uk/
