Dataset Details - SIAR Survey Data (2000)
The SIAR Dataset housed at the National Biodiversity Data Centre represents an abbreviated version of a larger survey Dataset held by University College Cork and obtained as part of a Petroleum Infrastructure Programme (PIP) "Cetaceans & Seabirds at Sea" project carried out by the CMRC between 1999-2004. In this, only the following ship-based cetacean sighting data respectively are held by the National Biodiversity Data Centre: sighting Date, Species, Latitude, Longitude and Comments (where applicable).

The data were captured to investigate and estimate with relative accuracy the summer abundance, density and distribution of cetaceans in western Irish waters. The SIAR project represented a smaller scale but comparable survey of an earlier transnational survey (SCANS) carried out in the summer of 1994; its study area in Irish Atlantic waters was considerably smaller than that of SCANS and was centred around the western continental shelf margin and the Rockall Trough.
These sighting data were captured by experienced trained personnel aboard a contracted research vessel using either a Double Platform or Single Platform line transect methodology. Records of cetaceans seen directly by visual observers were logged using on-board computerised and manual recording systems. Data from on-effort sightings (i.e., while undertaking a prescribed survey line or transect) and also off-effort sightings (i.e., while not undertaking a prescribed line/transect) were both captured. All cetacean detections were validated, quality-controlled and their positions determined using established scientific practice.
The Dataset held by the National Biodiversity Data Centre consists of records from coastal and marine waters off the west of Ireland and within Ireland's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
July-August 2000
A rigorous and structured process of data quality control was performed by the SIAR survey team, including during the data collection phase, the post-survey phase and the analytical phase prior to final reporting. Consequently the data quality can be considered as High.
The Dataset held by the National Biodiversity Data Centre is a much abbreviated version of the full sighting and effort/environmental data gathered during the SIAR survey of western Irish waters. Master copies are held by University College Cork and the University of St Andrews as partners to the project.
