Dataset Details - Mid Ulster Hare Surveys 2012-2015
Occurrence records of native Irish hares and non-native European hares from night-driven Distance sampling, camera trap surveys, and road casualties.

A PhD study on the impacts of the non-native European hare on the native Irish hare. PhD candidate - Anthony Caravaggi; Supervisors - Dr. Neil Reid, Prof. Ian Montgomery.
Continuous nocturnal Distance sampling across ~700km of roads in Mid-Ulster in 2012-13. Camera trap surveys were carried out in a number of locations in Mid-Ulster from 2013-2015. Road casualties were reported by the public and collected by Anthony Caravaggi. Full details of Distance sampling and camera trap methods can be found in: Caravaggi et al. (2015) Biological Invasions. DOI: 10.1007/s10530-014-0759-1. Caravaggi et al. (2016) Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation. DOI: 10.1002/rse2.11
A 1,652 km2 area of the mid-Ulster region of Northern Ireland (centroid coordinates 54° 45'21.1 ? N, 6° 39'29.6 ? W).
Winter 2012 - summer 2015
Individuals were identified by Anthony Caravaggi, and validated by Neil Reid. Hybridisation between the species has been observed, and hare hybrids may be phenotypically variable, thus species were classified as European-like and Irish-like. Nevertheless, with the exception of 6 animals, individuals were assigned to species with a high degree of confidence. Data were processed and stored accurately.
Complete. Camera trap data have been published on figshare (https://figshare.com/s/89016efaffc611e48b0806ec4bbcf141), as required by the standards of the journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation.
