Dataset Details - Newt Survey 2010-2014
A survey of smooth Newt distribution in Ireland since 2010
17/06/2013
03/03/2018
To determine the distribution of smooth newt in Ireland and to highlight the importance of wetland conservation. Re-visiting of previously surveyed sites to monitor declines or increases of newt populations.
Data is collected through the submission of sightings by the public and from IWT trained surveyors who select and survey specific sites. The survey uses an observation only methodology and is simply a presence or absence type survey; no capturing or handling of newts is required. Records are submitted through the IWT'S website and checked before submission to the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
The islands of Ireland
2010 to present day
With the advent of mobile phones with high quality cameras, the majority of records are accompanied by photos. In the absence of a photo the recorder is contacted and questioned about their record to eliminate any confusion with the Common Lizard. Once records are validated they are submitted to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. IWT has provided an online fact sheet to highlight the morphological and habitual differences between newts and lizards to aid the public in determining what species they have sighted.
